Overlanding Pakistan is the stuff of travel legend. During the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, thousands travelled overland through Pakistan while following the hippie trail between Istanbul and New Delhi, but following the onset of long-lasting political and sectarian instability in the late 1970s, tourism in the country took a severe hit. This is a shame, because Pakistan is one of Asia’s most intriguing destinations, a land teeming with diverse wildlife, deep culinary traditions, and landscapes equal parts serene and dramatic.
Each of Pakistan’s cities has its own character. The ancient city of Lahore is awash with UNESCO-listed landmarks, stunning Mughal architecture, and multi-coloured bazaars. Highlights include the Badshahi Mosque, Jahangirs Tomb, and the Lahore Fort. Meanwhile Pakistan’s lively capital city Islamabad is a modern metropolis and home to such sights as the Pakistan Monument and the iconic Faisal Mosque.
Unfortunately, these decades of negative news coverage have left Pakistan with a bad reputation in most travellers’ minds, but those who do visit will be rewarded with a land of diverse natural and historical riches, a remarkably welcoming and hospitable people, and a truly unique and enchanting adventure.
The Karakoram Highway, which connects Pakistan with Western China, is one of the world’s greatest thoroughfares. A mountain road with hairpin curves, the highway has become a hot spot for adventure tourism, no doubt because it passes through three of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful mountain ranges in the world - the Himalayas, the Karakoram, and the Hindu Kush – as well as a whole host of other natural and cultural attractions.
